Fallen Heroes

A good friend of mine recently sent me this picture:

It is composed of the images of 607 soldiers which have died in Iraq. It is very creative and sad. Sad not only because of the loss of life, but sad that someone would try to politicize their lives in a way that many of them would undoubtedly disapprove of.

Let me make this extremely clear. All of these men were volunteers. Just as I did from '90 to '96, they volunteered not only to take the lives of others, but to give their own lives to their country. Every single one of them made the decision that they were willing to lay down their lives in service to their country.

So yes it is sad that they died, but fully understand that it was a choice they all made willingly.

Nigerian Scam Migrates

Apparently the old Nigerian Scam has migrated to Taiwan.

I just recieved the following email:

FROM THE DESK OF:
MR. JUN XIAO
HUA NAN COMMERCIAL BANK LTD.
NAN KANG BRANCH, TAIWAN
REPUBLIC OF CHINA

I am Bank Manager of Hua Nan Commercial Bank, Nan Kang branch, Taiwan,R.O.C.and my name is Mr.Jun Xiao. You will be surprise to receive this mail, because we have not met before or spoken on phone.I believe you will be in the position to help me in my bid to secure this urgent and very important help from you.A British Oil consultant/contractor with the Chinese Solid Minerals Corporation,Mr Raymond Beck made a numbered time (Fixed)
Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$30,000,000.00 (Thirty Million Dollars) in my branch.Upon maturity,I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the Chinese Solid Minerals Corporation that Mr.Raymond Beck died in a plane crash along with his wife Mr
and Mrs Raymond & Dorene Beck in EgyptAir Flight 990,1999 air crash(for more information about this crash and person you can contact this website:http://www.s-t.com/daily/11-99/11-02-99/d08ho174.htm Since we got this information about his death.

On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a WILL, and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless. I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Raymond Beck did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$30,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank.No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to Laws of Republic of
China, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Chinese Government if nobody applies to claim the fund. The Senior Executive Vice President Mr.Sheng-Yih Hu (Owen) is willing to give it to the government to have is own cut too.You can check the site http://www.icbc.com.tw/ Quick Menu About ICBC Senior Management Profiles so that you know this person.Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as the next of kin to Mr.Raymond Beck so
that the fruits of this old man's labor will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials.

This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names
and address so that the attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favor for the transfer. A bank account in any part of the world that you
will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/nextof kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 60% for me,and 40% for you. There is no risk at all as all the paperworkfor this transaction will be done by the attorney and my position as the Branch Manager Guarantees the successful execution of this transaction.Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. Please send me your confidential telephone for easy communication. Please observe utmost confidentiality, and be rest assured that this transaction would
be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to investment with my part of the funds. And do reply me at the private email box for confidentiality purpose : junx@mail2world.com

Thank you as i await your further response.

Faithfully Yours,
Jun Xiao.

And I was just sitting here thinking: "How can I get my hands on 40% of $30 million.

Dreams really do come true.

Personality Quiz

Just curious to find out how some computer hosted personality quiz would describe me, I decided to take this quiz.

Here are my results:

Wackiness: 10/100
Rationality: 126/100
Constructiveness: 60/100
Leadership: 100/100

You are an SRCL--Sober Rational Constructive Leader. This makes you an Ayn Rand ideal. Taggart? Roark? Galt? You are all of these. You were born to lead. You may not be particularly exciting, but you have a strange charisma--born of intellect and personal drive--that people begin to notice when they have been around you a while. You don't like to compromise, but you recognize when you have to.

You care absolutely nothing what other people think, and this somehow attracts people to you. Treat them well, use them wisely, and ascend to your rightful rank.

This is pretty close to me, though I am probably somewhat wackier than they make me out to be.

Rational Self Interest

I get a lot of really shocked looks from both conservatives and liberals when I tell them that I live by the principle of rational self interest.

The liberals immediately call me greedy, heartless, etc. etc. They cannot conceive of someone not devoting their lives to the needs/wants of others. The thought of placing your own interests before those of the needy masses is tantamount to sacrilege to them.

The conservatives immediately call me a sinner and start quoting various biblical verses in which we are told to help our neighbor, yada yada.

At least the conservatives are happy if I tithe my 10% to the church. The liberals want me to tithe 50%+ to their god, big government.

The problem is none of them stop to find out what rational self interest is, let alone ask me what my rational self interests are. For instance, I consider it to be in my interest to give to certain charities and I have been doing so on a yearly basis since I was 18. This makes me feel good, therefore it is in my self interest.

I almost always stop to help if someone is broke down on the side of the road. Again, because it makes me feel good. I help friends and neighbors when I can. I do a lot of things that others might not immediately be able to connect to my self interest, but rest assured that everything I do has some benefit to me.

Immer der Nase nach

Why is it that EU countries such as Sweden, France, and Germany (along with the economic leftists here) just don't get it?

Lower taxes means increased growth and prosperity.

Tupac in School?

Born in 1972, I grew up a kid of the late 70s and early 80s. This meant that I came to age about the same time as the Rap/Hip-hop genre.

I still like to go old school and pull out such favorites as Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow and even the Fat Boys. It is not uncommon to hear the Beastie Boys, NWA, AMG, etc playing on my stereo as I cruise around in my convertible.

That being said, I read one of the most asinine things I've peered upon in some time. Apparently, a school district in Worcester, MA has decided it would be a good idea to add Tupac Shakur (one of my favorites) to the summer reading list.

Is it any wonder Bill Cosby has to complain that kids can't even speak proper English when their teachers are passing off the poetry of Shakur as a reading assignment?

His book reads more like the text of an SMS or Instant Message log than anything else. It is rife with misspellings, numbers substituted for words such as to and for, and just generally lacks any educational value.

As long as public schools keep trying to seem cool rather than trying to teach, they will keep falling further and further behind.

Minister of Liberty

I am now the Minister of Liberty in the ongoing battle to bring down the Instipundit.

I shall work day and night in hopes of one day supplanting him from his throne.

In Defense of DDT

Walt Williams has an uncanny knack at cutting through the BS and making known the true results of various actions.

Today, he shows how the movement to ban DDT caused pain, suffering and death for millions of people.

Michael Badnarik

Though I am not a member of the LP, Michael Badnarik will be getting my vote come Nov. Here is a nice little Flash movie that presents his case:

If you missed it, just right click it and click "play."

Crappy Gym Music

Last week I finally did something that I have been needing to do for a couple of years now. I got off my fat ass and joined a gym.

Many years ago, when I got out of the Navy, I was in great shape. A shattered knee and broken ankle later, I have gotten out of the habit of working out and my stomach and ass have paid dearly.

Just so everyone hears me, I am fat because I became lazy after a couple of accidents. I am not fat because of McDonald's, Wendy's, Bryers Ice Cream or any other company or product. I am a direct product of my own lack of motivation.

Fortunately, last week something clicked in my head and I realized I was slowly ensuring that I would have a very unpleasant old age and decided to do something about it.

The gym I joined is great, I have 24 hour access via a magnetic key, there is ample equipment, so I have not yet had to wait on any, and I didn't have to sit through some high pressure sales pitch just to sign up for some 3 year program that allows them to debit my account.

The problem is, they play really crappy music. Some combination of Top 40ish/Muzak crap that really gets on my nerves. I much prefer to listen to something hardcore when I work it. It gets me pumped and ready to work hard. The crap they play make me want to speed through my workout as fast as possible so as to avoid any permanent damage from prolonged exposure.

The 6000 What?

I wonder if the idiot that forgot to file 6000 petition signatures was to busy down at the 7-11 trying to nuke a burrito to remember to file them.

Unfortunately, their is certain to be fallout from the DARE crowd over this. There is always some retread screwing it up for everybody.

Buttless Chaps

Here we have the latest piece in the Gay Outdoorsman line at Sears:

Kerry Picks Edwards

In what can only be labeled as a terribly uninspired decision, John Kerry has pegged John Edwards as his running mate.

I assume the thought behind this is that Edwards can help him in the South. However, I do not believe this strategy would work. It has already been reported that Edwards would likely not be able to retain his seat in the upcoming elections and Edwards is generally out of touch with the majority of Southern voters, Republican or Democrat.

Edwards may attract a few dunces that cast their votes solely on personal appearance and may help with the Black vote, but all in all I think better choices could have been made.

This now leaves the door wide open for Bush to shake things up.

British Victory

Not that I am an advocate of spanking, but I was pleased to see that the House of Lords had the good sense not to ban spanking.

I see this as a victory for all of Britain. Federal governments really have absolutely no business telling parents how they should and should not raise their children. There are already laws in place to punish abuse of children and this is enough.

Free State Blogs

It occurred to me that there must be other bloggers out there interested in the FSP so I have decided to set up a blog ring for members or friends of the Free State Project in order to help promote the movement.

The requirements are as follows:

    1. You must have one of the following banners on the front page of your site:

Please do not hotlink to these! Please save these to your own server. Resize them as necessary for your site. The Photoshop files are available by contacting me. I am by no means a graphic artist, so if you can improve on these, please do.

    2. You must link your chosen banner to here: http://fukiblog.blogspot.com/2004/07/free-state-blogs.html

You must also link to the FSP on the main page of your blog.

    3. I also recommend that you add all members listed under "Free State Blogs" on the main page of this blog to your blogroll, preferably to their own section, but I will leave that to your discretion.

    4. Once you have accomplished the above, contact me and I will add you to the official blogroll.

Update: After discussion with others, I have ammended the requirements.

Where do you stand?

There is a site called Politopia which has a quiz to help you see where you stand politically. Here are my results:

NW-You would feel most at home in the Northwest region. You advocate a large degree of economic and personal freedom. Your neighbors include folks like Ayn Rand, Jesse Ventura, Milton Friedman, and Drew Carey, and may refer to themselves as "classical liberals," "libertarians," "market liberals," "old whigs," "objectivists," "propertarians," "agorists," or "anarcho-capitalist."

Another good site for this is Political Compass. Here are my results:

Economic Left/Right: 6.62
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.00

The United Nations and the Average American Citizen

The second piece for today is the first in a series that I started writing back in early 2003. Unfortunately, through a combination of time contraints and laziness, I never wrote any of the follow-ups. I still may at some point.

Since this is rather lengthy, I will just provide a link to it:

The Average US Citizen and the United Nations - How One Threatens the Other.

Three Types of Liberals

Being that I am somewhat busy today, I thought I would post a couple of pieces that I have written in the past. The first comes with a qualification (for those that are nitpicky about these sorts of things): I use the term "liberals" in its modern American interpretation, not the classical meaning of the word and I could have easily substituted the word "leftist."

Three Types of Liberals

As a libertarian (small l, not a member of the LP), I find myself in agreement with many of the views of liberals. However, very rarely are those views arrived at by the same reasoning and even more seldom are the solutions to problems seen to be the same. For this reason, I have decided to take a good look at the different types of liberals. As far as I can tell, liberals generally fall into 3 basic categories (with some overlap): ignorant, lazy, and evil.

The first type is those that I consider ignorant, i.e. lacking knowledge, not stupid. They are easily the most likeable of the liberals and all of my liberal friends fall into this category. These are the ones who actually believe that the policies they advocate are for the good of mankind. They are truly interested in making the world a better place and in many cases do. You will find an abundance of these liberals working for NGOs such as the Peace Corps.

The problem with this group is that they fail to see the existence of the other two groups. They think that everyone espousing their ideas does so out of the same concern for others that they themselves have. Sadly, this is not the case. They do not understand or realize that there are those whose only goal is to use the power of the larger government that they advocate for personal gain at the expense of the very people they purport to help. The “Ignorants” are also usually under the misguided notion that the only way to help people is through the government and that anyone who does not believe this is mean and uncaring. For one reason or another, they refuse to admit that human suffering concerns other political groups just as much as it concerns liberals and that more often than not, the very things they advocate tend to exacerbate the problem rather than solve it.

The second type of liberal is a truly despicable one, the lazy liberal. This type is fairly self-explanatory. They are the ones calling for more government programs so that they can continue to sponge off of the hard work and efforts of others. They are constantly looking for more ways to leach off of government programs and private charity. They fiercely fight against all efforts of government reform and are not above using race baiting and other such deplorable tactics to achieve their goals. In this aspect, they are very similar to the evil liberals. This group has absolutely no regard for the effects of their actions so long as they can continue suckling from society’s teat.

The last group is by far the most clever and the most dangerous category. The evil liberal is the one who knows full well that true equality and a better world can not be achieved by bloated government bureaucracy, yet uses government programs as a means to an end, namely keeping themselves in a position of power. They know they can manipulate the other two groups into voting for them by making promises of increased government handouts. They unscrupulously use this knowledge to gain as much power as possible over any and everything they manage to gain control of these. They are willing to sacrifice anyone they can to keep this power, especially those they are supposedly helping.

No matter which category they happen to fall into, the liberals all have a few things in common. They espouse nonsensical big government solutions to most problems. They have absolutely no qualms about forcing those whose views are different to comply with liberal wishes and they are willing to use other people’s stolen money to achieve their goals.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Who Needs Sleep?

Well, I couldn't sleep last night, so I decided to revamp the design of this site.

I went with a 3 column layout because I think it is a little more functional, but since I do the majority of my coding the old fashioned way (by hand) and not with a WYSIWYG editor, it took me the better part of the night.

I hope you like the new design.
